Planning a destination wedding in Thailand is a trend that is enchanting more and more Indian couples with it’s picturesque locations, grand venues, differentiated culture and cuisine as well as ease of transport.
As one of the leading destination wedding planners in India, we continue to scout for new destination wedding locations for our clients which creates a unique and memorable wedding experience not only for them but also their guests. As part of this never-ending quest, Theme Weavers Designs’ team recently embarked on a journey to Chiang Mai, fifth largest city in Thailand but instead of a traffic choked urban sprawl, it presents a picturesque downtown easily navigated on foot, surrounded by mountains and lush countryside. We were invited to explore Chiang Mai as a wedding destination by Shangri- La hotel and Thai airways.
The trip to Chiang Mai was indeed an unforgettable one. Chiang Mai can be truly seen as an upcoming destination for the wedding season and if a destination wedding in thailand is on your mind. It is the largest city in northern Thailand, and just to give you a relatable review, it can be compared to the Mussoorie of India, surrounded by the highest mountains in the country, with a breath-taking charming beauty.
As a member of the wedding industry, I can definitely vouch for Chiang Mai as an upcoming destination. Thailand has always been famous for hosting Indian weddings. However, places like Bangkok & Phuket have been over exploited and people are definitely looking at newer options for their celebrations. Instead of holding the events at crowded, famous cities, people now prefer places that are more scenic and versatile.
The flight to Chiang Mai is via Bangkok. New Delhi to Bangkok flight is about 06 hours and then after a transit of 2.5 hours, there is an hour’s flight to Chiang Mai. But once you land in Chiang Mai, you realise that being a part of the picturesque scene it is absolutely worth the travel. The Bangkok flight has connections from most of the metropolitan cities, thus, this would be convenient to the wedding guests travelling from the various Indian cities.
Chiang Mai offers Visa on Arrival, making it a convenient process for the guests, however for a destination wedding in thailand, it’s better to apply for visa from India to save time. The visa is also quite cost effective, ranging t about INR 5000- INR 5500.
The weather at Chiang Mai is tropical and is what the Indian wedding guests would be used to. Like India, the rainy season is between May to October, April is the warmest, whereas January is quite cold.
Chiang Mai, has something to offer to all the wedding guests. It offers a great range of places to visit. Significant monuments & ancient temples like the 3 King Monument, the Wat Chedi Luang Temple and the Doi Suthep Temple can be visited by the guests who have an inclination towards knowing about the history of the city.
For youngsters, river rafting, zip lining, ATV riding, cabaret shows and hot air ballooning, Tube Trek Water Park can be explored. There are certain things that the entire family can do together, like visiting the night market and other famous shopping malls, going to the night safari, visiting the 3D art museum, the Maesa Elephant Camp and the Handicrafts Village
Exotic hotels, convention centres, themed restaurants, royal parks and convention complex can accommodate a varied number of guests and serve as various venues to host the wedding functions.
Our hotel recommendation in Chiang Mai as the venue for a destination wedding in thailand
Shangri-La is definitely the best option when it comes to picking a hotel for a destination wedding. As observed, for Indian destination wedding, usually people book around 150- 200 rooms and they prefer to stay in one property itself, rather than making the guests stay in different hotels.
Shangri-La is about 20 minutes from the airport and has about 277 rooms of various categories which range from INR 13000 to INR 16000 approximately.
The banquet & conference rooms are spread over various levels. There are several event spaces where the various weddings functions can take place, giving the guests a unique experience each time. The Grand Lanna Ballroom can accommodate about 1650 pax – which can be used for the wedding reception and a splendid Mehendi can be done by the poolside.
The in-house spa should be definitely included in the hotel package for the wedding guests. It can be conducted on the day of their arrival to give them a relaxing welcome post their long travel.
Chiang Mai is definitely great as a wedding destination, and can be explored to create a great experience for various celebrations if you are considering a destination wedding in thailand.
